A lot of my impressions of New York are basically comparisons/contrasts of New York and Chicago. Given that I live in Chicago and know it best, I naturally compare other cities to it. Compared to Chicago, New York is older and dirtier.
One of the first things I noticed were the natural materials used in building New York. Although much of Chicago is built from stone or concrete, the Sears Tower and Hancock Building create an impression that Chicago is very metallic and black. New York's tallest remaining skyscrapers are made of stone based material and give the city a lighter, more natural feel. The natural material reflects the ware of time more clearly.
New York is also dirtier. I can't remember a single alley in New York for garbage - I was convinced I would find one but didn't. The first time I needed a garbage can I had to walk around for five minutes. On Sunday, New York was celebrating Brazilian Day and there were 100's of tents set up, in addition to kiosks all over the city. By night time all the tents were torn down and the garbage of 100's of thousands was left on the streets. Basically, I came to excuse New York for being so messy.
